Knowing when to put down the bullhorn of social media

Now a days, every major church event likes to maximize it’s use of social media streams. We use twitter to fire off thoughts and ideas, Flickr and tweetphoto to grab a quick pick of our favorite speaker, live streaming to help share the event with those that couldn’t make it and blogging to go deeper and reflect on the impact of the event. But do we know when to put down the bullhorn of social media and choose other methods of communication or even better, get face to face? Continue Reading…

Let the #Echo10 conference begin!

Yesterday was a long day of travel, but we made it without complication.

I’m over at Watermark Church early in hopes to meet up with some people before things get under way and maybe take  minute to look over the schedule of events and decide on some breakouts that I want to attend. There are so many awesome speakers here I don’t know which ones to choose.

Stay tuned for some awesome updates of Echo Conference 2010!

How about a Dual 6-Core i7 MacPro – Oh Ya!

So the blog world and twitter have been all a buzz about the new Mac Pro and iMac refresh coming soon to an Apple Store near you.
John Grubber of Daring Fireball seems to be putting all his “apples” in one basket on this one. Relaunching his podcast with some hot topical news that any Apple fanboy would want to hear.

But in traditional Apple style, Cupertino is keeping things hush hush. All we know for sure is that retail supply chain has dried up and retailers are being told to keep minimal stock on hand. This is usually the sign of an imminent product refresh from Apple. But imminent does have a time line to it. So we could see this tomorrow, or maybe sometime next month. But needless to say Apple could do with a dose of positive PR right about now, so maybe a product refresh will be sooner then later.

So what are your thoughts? Is Apple going to roll out a new powerhouse of a Mac Pro? Will the iMac’s finally get some iCores?

Go with the Code

My latest fascination has been with the whole QR code thing.

I first came across them in Blackberry Messenger 5. But since then I’ve seen them popping up all over the place.

I have some interesting ideas about how to use some QR codes of my own. Can’t wait to get to Echo Conference to try them out.

“I Still Don’t Know” – But I have learned a lot since.

About 3 or 4 months ago I had this script for a short sermon video hit me like a freight train.

I’m not sure who first said the line, if it was something I thought up or something I actually heard one of our boys say, but “I still don’t know if there is a God…” became the seed for a video idea that blended the true life stories of two of our street kids (never went through the foster agency) into something that I felt that captured the true meaning of why my wife Trisha and I got involved in helping teens both through the local foster agency and a few kids right off the street. There is an anonymous author that said “People always come into your life for a reason, a season and a lifetime. When you figure out which it is, you know exactly what to do.” Trisha and I feel that these kids come into our life much the same way. And the one thing we hope to share with them is our love, but if they happen to realize that God loves them too in the process; well then that’s not bad either.

About a week later we were discussing the upcoming series at our planning meeting and I knew we had a ringer. The series was looking at the mission statement of Lakeside and the team felt that the video truly captured the essence of of “… Helping Others …” so we finished it off and put it in the service.

Since then I have also submitted it to a few film festivals. Although it didn’t win anything it gave me a great opportunity to get some constructive feedback. Combine that with some reading I’ve been doing and I hope some day to re-shoot it and apply all that I’ve learned. A special thanks to Brad Zimmerman for giving me some honest and constructive feedback.

Here it is in it’s original form. I’ve learned that the shaky shoot thing didn’t work the way I thought it would and the importance of doing some post work. But the story is still strong and I feel it still does carry the message.

Enjoy

Special thanks to Matt and Tyler for giving me the stories that make up this film, Without them it would have been nothing but a great one liner.

Product Review Untangle – And we go Video

So I wanted to try something a little different for today’s blog post.

Rather then trying to explain to you in text how the untangle firewall works, I figured why not shoot a screencast?

So grab your hot beverage of choice, sit back and enjoy the ride.

What to say when you want to say nothing

I think it was Steve Murphy over at Murphy24p that first put me on to this video he found on Vimeo. Steve’s point was about the importants of having a good script even when there is no dialog.

Later at Gurus Of Tech I shared this video with Shane from City on a Hill Productions because it really says so much with out saying anything. And I think that is a powerful skill of a script writer.

As I start on my adventures in film making I hope that I can write as detailed a script as this.

enjoy…

iPhone v. BlackBerry v. Android

Let me start by saying I love my blackberry. I’ve been using a blackberry for about 5 or 6 years now. My current unit is a Bold 9000 and despite some battery issues and the lack of an official OS5 I’m very happy with it. For the last 2 years my wife has been using an iPhone 3G and she loves it. I tried for many years to get her into a smart phone but she wouldn’t do it. She saw the blackberry as being too corporate and as a teacher, that’s foreign ground for her. But I kept taking her to the phone shops and showing her the iPhone and one day she said “maybe she could see using it”. So I buried that in the back of my mind and 3 months later she opened up her new iPhone at Christmas. And since then she can’t imagine going back to a dumb phone.
