During my days in the computer business I had strong opinions about antivirus software, probably more passionately then some Mac Fanboys. There were a few antivirus packages that I would passionately tell customers to uninstall even if they did just pay for it last week. I had my tested software and there was nothing as good as it as far as I was concerned.
Then when I left the industry and was looking for something for my home computer that wasn’t as expensive as my favorite package. I was after all trying to get a new business off the ground and I wasn’t bringing home a paycheck anytime soon. I knew there were some free packages out there, but was never impressed with them. I did some research and found Avast. What caught my attention about Avast was this wasn’t a watered-down antivirus package. It was full-fledged with 14 months of protection. Why was it free??? I did a little digging and found that the company has a philosophy that in order to rid the internet of a virus, every computer must be protected, and if a single mom or college student can’t afford an antivirus program, we will never be able to truly eliminate the virus. I was sold.
5 years later I still use and recommend Avast. They offer upgraded packages that include additional internet protection features for a fee that is inline with other antivirus packages, but they don’t bombard you daily with offers to upgrade. I like that too.
