In a previous review, I covered using the Untangle firewall software to do some pretty neat filtering and internet safety tricks, but what if you don’t have any money to spend on a refurbished computer or just feel like you don’t have the tech savvy to setup your own firewall. Well then that’s where OpenDNS comes in.
OpenDNS is an awesome service that replaces your default DNS server (the server that tells your computer where and how to connect to other servers on the internet) with an intelligently filtered and categorized server. If you want a basic “family friendly” filter for your home computer or home network, check out FamilyShield. This service takes all the fuss out of managing the content filters and even gives you the necessary step by step process of how to setup your home computer or home router with the new service. You don’t need to be a network guru or windows wizard to set this up. Simply follow the directions and change the two numbers for the DNS server and your up and running.
The best part of this service is that it is completely FREE! So go try it out, you have nothing to loose.
Hi ChurchTechGuy!
Thanks for helping to get the word out about FamilyShield. You hit the nail on the head — there are lots of things you can do if you are a technical person to help filter content, etc, but for the less tech-savvy amongst us, FamilyShield is a great, super simple option.
If you or your readers ever have any questions about OpenDNS, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
