Back in the day I was “testing” propresenter… Aka had a pirated version… Set up the church service no problem, then just before the service booted it up and got a “this is stolen” warning… Had no lyrics for the service.. Had to explain why…. That really sucked!!! Lesson learned!!

That is a good one. Did something similar on a clients server back in my IT guy days.

In January of 2009 we were having a “guest preacher” who was our next prospective staff member. Instead of “showing him” how to turn on his lapel microphone, we (in the sound booth) assumed he knew how and knew he was supposed to.

The sound was fine through the entire worship service. We were using SongShowPlus at the time. Our projectors in the front and the one in the back are all on the same system, but because of proximity it’s relatively easy to “freeze” the back projector, or “freeze” the front ones and keep the back one “thawed”.

When it came time for the sermon, the important part, that the members of our congregation were going to “vote” on, the pastor could NOT be heard. He was the director of missions and had brought the message to our church many times in the past, during the absence of our preacher and all.

There were about four of us in the booth who tried to get his attention to tell him to turn on his mic. We were doing sign language, hand signals, texting someone in the choir to get them to tell him, and even holding up signs but nothing would get him to turn on the microphone. He was moving around a significant amount so we couldn’t just turn on a stage mic and expect it to pick up. Our last result was to “freeze” the front projectors on the title screen and to put a scrolling message on the back projector. The message was at the top, then the bottom, then we made it about 75 font and put it in the middle and it said “your mic is off and nobody can hear you”.

Had we not known this man so well, that wouldn’t have been our last attempt. The choir was sitting behind him and each of them started to snicker and nobody in the congregation had any idea of what was going on. Our church is a pretty good size church for the town that it’s in and we were averaging 400 in a worship service.

His vote was unanimous….our joke was it’s because they didn’t hear what he really said. People were looking at the sound guy and everything, but we did all we could to get it corrected and nothing worked…
